“It’s a magical world, Hobbes, ol’ buddy…Let’s go exploring!” – Bill Watterson
While the allure of the mountains is undeniable, a well-deserved break is equally important. Fortunately, Stowe, Vermont, and its surroundings offer a plethora of engaging activities. Here are five noteworthy options to consider for your rest day.
1. Visit a Coffee Roaster
Located just 15 minutes from Stowe in Waterbury is Vermont Artisan Coffee and Tea Roaster. This certified organic roaster operates sustainably, providing coffee for retail and food service. Guests can enjoy a modern coffee bar and observe the roasting process through glass windows. Additionally, they offer a variety of non-dairy cream options, including oat milk, and sell coffee by the pound, either as whole beans or ground to order.
Noteworthy feature: the modern restroom equipped with a heated toilet seat.
2. Glassblowing Demonstration
Adjacent to the coffee roaster is a glassblowing studio, where visitors can often witness skilled artisans crafting stunning glass pieces. While we missed a live demonstration during our visit, a dedicated viewing area allows guests to appreciate the artistry through a wall of windows.
3. Cider and Brewery Tour
Vermont boasts the highest number of craft breweries per capita in the United States, alongside an impressive array of cideries and distilleries. For a more immersive experience, consider acquiring a brewery passport to collect stamps from each location you visit.
Cold Hollow Cider Mill
Established in 1974 by the descendants of Vermont’s first governor, Cold Hollow Cider Mill began as a small family venture and has grown into a popular destination. Visitors can enjoy cider tastings, including flights, and explore the gift shop across the parking lot. The mill utilizes a traditional rack and cloth pressing method dating back to the 1920s, offering a unique experience alongside their renowned cider donuts and locally-sourced maple syrup.
