“Learn something new. Try something different. Convince yourself that you have no limits.” – Brian Tracy
When traveling throughout the United States, joining a tour or participating in a class can significantly enhance your experience. It provides an excellent opportunity to connect with like-minded individuals while discovering the beauty of your surroundings.
However, you may have reservations about committing to such activities, particularly regarding their value and whether they will meet your expectations. I understand this hesitation, as I too was initially skeptical about REI’s offerings. Eventually, I decided to try them, and I was pleased with my decision.
REI provides a diverse range of activities across the nation, from California to New York and Chicago, allowing individuals to gain insight into regions they might not have explored otherwise. I participated in two classes offered by REI, both located in New Jersey, though similar opportunities are available wherever REI operates.
Wilderness Survival Class
With a keen interest in survival skills, particularly in remote settings, I was eager to enroll in a wilderness survival class. After some research, I found a one-day class offered by REI for $65, which seemed like the ideal opportunity.
Registering for the class was straightforward; however, the details regarding the preparation and equipment needed were not communicated as clearly as I had hoped. Consequently, I arrived wearing jeans and a sweater, unprepared for the rainy weather.
On a particularly rainy day, I joined five others at a park in Morristown, NJ. Our instructor took us to a small camp area with a lean-to, where she discussed essential items for a survival pack and how to create a tarp tent.
Typically, the class would include hands-on experience building a debris shelter, but due to the inclement weather, we hiked back to our starting point after an informative session. Overall, the experience was somewhat disappointing as I did not gain new skills and primarily ended up wet and cold. Nonetheless, the class provided a valuable opportunity to connect with other participants, which added some redeeming quality to the experience.
Outdoor Rock-Climbing Class for Beginners
After my wilderness survival class, I was motivated to try outdoor rock climbing, especially since I had a 23% discount coupon. As a non-member of REI, this brought the class cost to $99.
This class involved better communication and preparation than the previous one. Participants received a detailed list of required gear along with optional items, while REI provided essential climbing equipment.
On a bright sunny day, we gathered with nine participants and two experienced instructors who guided us in essential techniques such as belaying and knot tying before we began our climbs.

The atmosphere was invigorating, filled with climbers of varying skill levels, from seasoned ultra-marathoners to complete novices. I finished the day with scraped knees, new friendships, and a significant adrenaline rush.
This class was one of the most enjoyable experiences I have ever had, providing me with newfound respect for professional climbers. My first ascent was marred by nerves, and yet it was exhilarating; the sensations of fear and adrenaline combined were invigorating. I wholeheartedly recommend this class, available across the nation, and I may even consider taking an advanced course myself.
Other Classes
During my time in the rock-climbing group, I met someone who had recently participated in a bike tour. Unfortunately, on that cloudy day, most participants canceled, leaving him to enjoy a private six-hour tour with the guide. He reported having an excellent time, emphasizing the worth of the experience.
If you seek opportunities to meet new individuals, explore unfamiliar landscapes, and acquire new skills, REI offers a class tailored to your interests. It’s a chance to venture into an experience you have been contemplating for some time.
