Hiking Pico da Vara on São Miguel Island
São Miguel, one of the nine Azorean islands situated in the Atlantic, boasts stunning landscapes, numerous hiking trails, and vibrant cities such as Ponta Delgada. With an abundance of sights and activities, selecting an adventure can be challenging. However, if lush forests, dense vegetation, and sweeping views captivate you, then hiking to the summit of Pico da Vara is an absolute essential.
Introduction to Pico da Vara
Pico da Vara, standing at 1,103 meters, is the highest point on São Miguel Island and features notoriously unpredictable weather patterns. This site is classified as a protected area known as the Pico da Vara nature reserve, characterized by a unique ecosystem that includes the largest remaining stand of native laurel forest and the critically endangered Azorean bullfinch.
Conservation Initiatives
Between 2009 and 2013, the LIFE Sustainable Laurel Forest project aimed to develop ecological restoration strategies while highlighting the region’s long-term sustainability. These forests remain under threat due to significant deforestation for agricultural expansion and the introduction of invasive plant and animal species. For further insights, refer to this report .
Optimal Hiking Conditions
For the best hiking experience, summer months offer the clearest weather conditions. During transitional seasons, one may encounter clouds obstructing views. Moreover, it’s important to note that Pico da Vara tends to generate its own microclimate, which may veil the summit even on seemingly clear days.
Due to its designation as a Nature Preserve, local inhabitants are committed to its preservation. Consequently, access to the summit is regulated, limiting the number of hikers permitted each day.
Permit Application Process
To commence your hike, a permit application is required. This form acknowledges your respect for the environment and commitment to “leave no trace.” The application process is straightforward, typically completed within thirty minutes, upon which you will receive your permit via email.
It should be noted that the entire application site is in Portuguese, which may present a challenge in translation.
Trailhead and Conditions
Parking is available near the trailhead, accessible via a rough logging road. Surrounding you is a dense forest, making weather observation essential before embarking on your hike, as conditions can change abruptly.
Informal accounts suggest that avid hikers have only witnessed the view from the peak a handful of times. Bad weather can also diminish visibility on the ascent.
The Hiking Experience
In anticipation of favorable weather, we adjusted our hiking plans accordingly. The permit allows for this flexibility, as enforcement is minimal.
The scenic trail begins within a picturesque cedar forest along a well-maintained path, which soon opens into expansive areas populated by forest and birdsong. Although I eagerly expected to spot a bullfinch, none appeared during our hike. The day was bright and clear, raising hopes for a magnificent view at the peak.
As we ascended, breathtaking views unfolded, with valleys flanking either side. The air was refreshingly clean, encouraging deep breaths at every opportunity, and the experience quickly became one of my favorite hikes.
However, this trek should not be underestimated. Despite an initial easy approach, the route features an elevation gain of approximately 637 meters (2,090 feet), requiring a reasonable level of fitness as resources may be scarce should difficulties arise.
Additionally, the mountain is rich in history. Tragically, two aircraft accidents occurred here during the 1940s, resulting in loss of life. The first was an Air France flight that claimed 48 lives, with wreckage scorched over a wide area. The second incident involved an air force plane. Memorials for these events can be found along the trail, highlighting their significance.
Arriving at the Summit
As we approached the peak, we encountered a veil of low-hanging clouds, obscuring visibility. Despite the anticipation of breathtaking panoramic views, we were met with dense fog and gusty winds at the summit.
Delighted with our achievement, I awaited a potential clearing in the clouds to catch a glimpse of the stunning 360-degree views, yet they remained elusive. Nonetheless, the hike proved to be a remarkable experience, one that left me immensely satisfied and inspired.
Conquering the highest peak on the island is a rewarding experience and a must for any visitors to São Miguel. It is undoubtedly among my favorite trails, alongside the Lagoa de Fogo hike, which is also worthy of exploration.
