Explore the Best of Pokhara, Nepal in One Day

top things to do in one day in Pokhara

Pokhara city remains one of my favorite destinations in Nepal. While it serves as a prominent tourist hub for visitors en route to the Annapurna mountain range, it also possesses a charming small-town ambiance accompanied by numerous delightful places to explore.

For those with just one day to experience Pokhara, several key attractions should not be overlooked, including Phewa Lake and Gupteshwor Cave. These sites are essential for a brief yet enriching visit.

Ideal Time to Visit Pokhara

Similar to other areas in Nepal, it is advisable to avoid the monsoon season, regarded as the least favorable time for travel. For the most pleasant weather, consider visiting in April and May, when flowers are in bloom and temperatures are moderate. My visit in December revealed a cooler climate, yet it remained quite comfortable.

Travel Tips for a Day in Pokhara

Allocate ample time for a leisurely exploration. Walking is the most effective way to immerse oneself in the local culture. Begin your day early to maximize your experience.

For those seeking adrenaline-fueled activities such as bungee jumping into the world’s second-deepest canyon or traversing the longest suspension bridge, these adventures are just a short drive away and can be combined with other city attractions. Options for transportation include tourist buses, car rentals, or bike rentals.

Must-Visit Locations in Pokhara

Phewa Lake (Fewa Lake)

Commencing your day at Phewa Lake is highly recommended. This tranquil area features picturesque mountain views and a serene atmosphere, making it an ideal start to your Pokhara visit.

You can also take a boat ride from here around the lake and see some of the other sites around this large lake.

World Peace Pagoda (Shanti Stupa)

This site offers breathtaking panoramic views of the Annapurna range on clear days. It is also an exceptional spot for sunset views, as many temples in Nepal are situated at elevated locations. This pagoda is one of two located in Nepal and among eighty worldwide.

Moreover, it is conveniently located within a short walking distance of the next two attractions.

Gupteshwor Cave

Gupteshwor Cave is the longest cave in Nepal and a well-frequented destination for tourists. This cave houses a Hindu altar and features a sacred cow within its depths. The waters from Davis Falls flow through it, situated conveniently within the city. From Phewa Lake Park, a scenic two-mile walk, skirting the lake and passing through town, leads you to the cave.

As you descend toward the entrance of the cave, small shops selling gifts line the pathway. The entry fee for the cave is 100 rupees for foreigners.

Davis Falls

This captivating waterfall, located across from Gupteshwor Cave, is an easy stop during your one-day tour of Pokhara. After experiencing the cascading waters within the cave, you can view the falls for a nominal fee of 30 rupees.

This natural area serves as a refreshing haven amidst the busier parts of Pokhara.

Stroll Along the Boardwalk at Phewa Lake

The boardwalk at Phewa Lake is immensely popular among international visitors. As Nepal’s second-largest lake, Fewa offers an inviting space to relax.

Consider enjoying a boat ride or renting a canoe to explore the lake further, or visit Tal Barahi Temple, a significant religious site in Pokhara. Entrance to the temple costs 550 rupees, plus an additional charge of 20-30 rupees for a life jacket. Visitors are allotted just 30 minutes at the temple due to its popularity.

If visiting the temple doesn’t pique your interest, the boardwalk is lined with a variety of shops, cafes, bars, and restaurants providing ample entertainment on land.

Venturing Beyond Pokhara

For those inclined towards adventure sports, numerous activities are accessible just outside of Pokhara. These pursuits offer an excellent alternative for those desiring to explore beyond the city limits or for those with additional time. Participation in some activities may require a tourist bus or a guided tour.

Mountain Biking

Mountain biking ranks among the premier adventure activities, with local outfitters available in Pokhara arranging day trips for profound mountain biking experiences. The proximity to the Annapurna range affords remarkable opportunities for exploration on both foot and bike.

Bungee Jumping and Ziplining

For true thrill-seekers, consider bungee jumping into the second deepest canyon in the world or embarking on a zipline adventure. The starting price for a jump is approximately 5,000 rupees; further information can be found on Bungee Pokhara .

Explore the World’s Longest Pedestrian Suspension Bridge

The Baglung Kalika Suspension Bridge measures an impressive 567 meters in length, elevating 122 meters above the Kaligandaki River. Known as the Gandaki Golden Footbridge, this site offers magnificent views of Mount Dhaulagiri, one of the world’s 8,000-meter peaks. This rare opportunity promises an unforgettable experience, particularly for those unimpeded by a fear of heights.

Final Thoughts

Pokhara and its surroundings represent some of the most beautiful landscapes in Nepal, making it an ideal destination for a day’s exploration. If time is limited, walking is the most rewarding way to experience this area, exploring the scenic boardwalk along Fewa Lake, the Peace Pagoda, and all sites in between.
